Where is actually? A Warhammer 40k single player game – magazine, hot topic

You can hardly avoid Warhammer 40,000 (or Warhammer 40k), even if you have had little or no contact with the original tabletop game so far. In the meantime, there are numerous addons, editions, but also books, films and of course video games for the original game, which was first published in 1987, that move in the world of the universe. Anyone who is interested in the universe as a newcomer will quickly feel overwhelmed, but should definitely take a look at Games Workshop or one of the numerous other online shops. There you can numerous Order Warhammer 40,000 units, rule books or starter sets conveniently online. If you want to find out more about this, you are welcome to take a look at Dominik’s article about Warhammer 40,000, in which he explains a lot about the topic and in which you will certainly find a lot of helpful information, especially as a newcomer.

Warhammer 40k in video games

But of course we’re more into video games and the Warhammer 40k universe has a lot to offer there too. However, if you look at the previous games, you will quickly realize that the genres are very one-sided. Of course, given the origins of the franchise, it’s no surprise that strategy games of all kinds dominate the list. Whether turn-based or in real time, the choice is large.

But why do games of other genres so rarely get lost in the list? They exist, but they were rarely really good, especially in the early days. Most of the time they are mediocre and can only gather fans of the Wahrhammer franchises behind them. games like Warhammer: Vermintide 2 or Blood Bowl 2 are almost an exception here. But doesn’t the franchise have much more to offer? Games that can also reach gamers who have not been to the Warhammer universe before?

After all, in the spring of 2022 Warhammer 40,000: Darktide a new attempt to capture the universe in a big way outside of the strategy genre. Whether a 4 player co-op action game is the best choice for this is debatable. Too many games of this type have come out in the last few years and mostly got lost in the mediocrity and crowd. Back 4 Blood but recently showed that the genre continues to work and can provide many enthusiastic gamers. Let’s hope the best for Darktide.

How about a single player action adventure?

I have to admit that I’m not particularly well versed in the Warhammer universe myself, but I see the potential this has. Strategy games have their raison d’être and their appeal. Due to their origin, they mostly feel like a digitized version of the tabletop game.

Would an action adventure like Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order work in the Warhammer 40k universe?

In previous games, I’ve always had the feeling that fans of the universe in particular should be picked up. But how about a different approach and rolling up the target audience from behind? Why not aim primarily at “new customers”. To bring the universe and its lore closer to people like me, who may not have had any or only superficial experience with Warhammer? After years of nothing in the video game industry about online multiplayer and even games like Uncharted were given one unnecessarily, story-heavy single-player games in particular have recently been celebrated. I’m thinking of games like God of War, Spider-Man, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order or last Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

I can imagine something similar in the Warhammer 40k universe. Choose an existing story from the books or other lore, convert it into a video game and bring it onto the market as a single-player action adventure or as a shooter and make people happy. Good graphics, intuitive gameplay and of course an exciting story can appeal to and pick up Warhammer fans as well as those who want to become one. In previous games, I usually lack access to the story and then find it difficult to really get involved.

What do you wish?

What do you think of the idea or are you satisfied with previous Warhammer games? What is your favorite game and what kind of game would you like to see in the franchise?
