The 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong was originally conceived as a Popeye game. But even during development, the time came that Nintendo was no longer allowed to use the Popeye character. What now? Shigeru Miyamoto describes the situation back then in such a way that at first you didn’t know how to proceed until you had the idea of creating your own characters.
This is how Bluto became Donkey Kong, Olive became Pauline and Popeye became Mario. The basic concept of the game remained the same. Instead of Popeye having to save Olive from Bluto’s clutches, it was now Mario who had to protect Pauline from Donkey Kong.
