Useless Knowledge #10: Guybrush Threepwood’s name came about by accident – Useless Knowledge

Guybrush Threepwood, everyone knows him as the fearsome pirate who defeated the infamous LeChuck. Guybrush, what kind of name is that anyway? A rather strange one and that’s exactly how it came about.

To create the sprites for “The Curse of Monkey Island”, the graphic artists at LucasArts used the program Deluxe Paint, whose file extensions were *.bbm. since the main character didn’t have a name yet, but the graphics had to be created, the responsible graphic artist simply named the file “guybrush.bbm”.

“Guy” was just some guy and the suffix “brush” is used in graphic design to describe a “brush”, which is more or less a graphic template. Anyone who has ever had anything to do with Photoshop will also be confronted with “brushes” here and will know what is meant. By the way, it’s often said that the file was called “guy.brush”. However, this is not true, since Deluxe Art does not support the *.brush file extension.

So there was the graphic template from some guy, Guybrush, and since the developers couldn’t think of a better name, it was put into the game without further ado. This is how Guybrush Ulysses Threepwood came about, as the hero from the Monkey Island adventures is called by his full name.
